Community Greenhouse Project

It's almost time to register for the 2010 summer of Community Greenhouses...if you were a member in 2009 and wish to again participate, e-mail admin@mywcss.org to book your spot this year.

The focus of the Community Greenhouse Project is to promote social and environmental sustainability by allowing community members to grow their own organic herbs and vegetables six months of the year while engaging in a welcoming community environment. Ten percent of the crops harvested are donated to the Whistler Food Bank. It is great way for families and friends to bond, with their hands in the dirt and to remember where our food comes from. This program encourages healthy eating, a healthy balanced lifestyle and eating from local food sources reducing our “food miles”.

There are four, 20 by 40 foot greenhouses; two at Spruce Grove Field House, one at Myrtle Philip Community School and one at Alpha Lake Park. Each greenhouse contains eighteen, 2.5ft by 8ft boxes. The Greenhouse beds are rigged with heating cables and with irrigation systems.  Each box is divided with sting into 24 sections for different crops, leading to a very intensive and efficient from of gardening.  The annual fee of $60.00 for a box includes a WCSS Membership ($5), a wide variety of organic seeds, fertilizer, water, a gardening course and lots of on going support.  There is a wide variety of seeds available including beans, broccoli, beets, lettuce, peas, carrots, cucumber and many herbs.  Varieties have been determined by what’s worked best in past years.
