WHISTLER RECYCLES IT'S E-WASTE!

The amount of electronic products discarded globally has skyrocketed, with 20-50 million metric tonnes generated every year.  Electronic waste (e-waste) now makes up five percent of worldwide municipal solid waste, nearly the same amount as all plastic packaging, but it is much more hazardous.

From the Re-Use-It Centre, the materials are shipped to a consolidation location and from there they are only shipped to approved recyclers.  There are 3 recyclers in BC, 1 in Alberta and a minor amount goes to an approved recycler in Ontario.

These recyclers have undergone a rigorous environmental audit by a third party environmental auditor.  The audit criteria is established by Electronic Product Stewardship Canada (EPSC) through the Recycler Vendor Qualification Program (RVQP).  This criteria can be found at www.epsc.ca/recycle.  The audit program is not cheap and it is not easy.

The audits for the approved recyclers can last 6 months to a year.  These audits are not only conducted on the primary recycler who recieves materials directly from the progrma, but also each and every downstream processor right up until the time the materials is turned into a commodity for sale.  This is sometimes 3 to 4 companies down from the original primary recycler.

The RVQ Program verifies that recyclers have high environmental health and safety standards, materials are not exported to the developing world, and that prison labour is not used for the recycling of products.

You can find out more information on the recycling of the products handled through the Return It Electronics program by going to www.encorp.ca/electonics/productrecycling   You can also go to the ESABC 2008 annual report and get more information there at http://www.esabc.ca/cfm/index This is the last annual report published by the program.

Last year the RUI accepted 47 metric tonnes of e-waste !
